What To Include In a One-Card Reading (and FREE Journaling sheets!)

one card reading booklet front cover
Cards: Sharman Caselli Tarot

I have mentioned before that one-card readings can be very effective.

There is no need to draw multiple cards to get valuable insights from a reading, which is good news for beginners.

There is much you can see in just one card, and here I would like to demonstrate what you can cover in a one-card reading:

  1. First impressions: Keywords and phrases that come into your mind when you see the image. Also any feelings the image evokes.
  2. What to do / action to take: This should cover something practical and doable, active steps that can help influence a situation to achieve a positive outcome.
  3. What to avoid: Personal traits / habits / beliefs that could hinder a desired development or outcome.
  4. What to look out for: Something that is hidden; opportunities, obstacles, internal blocks…
  5. What needs attention: This could relate to a skill you need to develop, people around you, work, relationships, life style… a certain area of your life.
  6. Power Word / Phrase: A catch phrase, mantra or just one single word that will guide you onto the right track and towards achieving your desired outcome.
  7.  Affirmation: Same as 6, a positive statement to help you shift your mindset in a positive way.

You don’t have to cover all these points, especially when you’re just starting out learning the Tarot, but once you get stuck in, you will find it’s much easier than you first think.

two of wands tarot of quotes

Here’s an example with the Two of Wands, a reading I did for myself the other day, so the answers are specific and personal (your answers may differ):

First impressionsPlanning ahead! The only way is forward. Follow my passion. Embrace the unknown. Excitement. Opportunities. Vision. Travel and journeys.

What to do / action to take: Make a to-do list!

What to avoid: Procrastination, fear of the unknown

What to look out for: Turning new creative ideas into reality more quickly, becoming more efficient; planning and implementing with others. Diversifying…

What needs attention: Firing up and nurturing my ambition; be more driven. The changes I want to create in my work and personal life.

Power word / phrase: Get organised!

Affirmation: I can do this!

As you can see, there is no need to write a long essay. Keep it short and sweet, and for this purpose I have designed some fab journaling sheets for you:

one-card reading booklet A5 detailA4 Angel one card reading sheet (PDF doc.)

Two pages of the same sheet, so you can print double-sided, if your printer is set up for it.

A5 Angel one card journaling sheet (PDF doc.)

Two A5 angel sheets on one page, so you can create a booklet by printing on both sides of an A4 sheet.

You can print as many A5 sheets (double-sided) as you like. Perhaps you would like a booklet for the month ahead, for which you need 16 double-sided sheets folded in half.

You can use the cover page to name your booklet, e.g. My Angel Card Messages, My Oracle Card Readings, My Daily Draws etc.

I hope you will enjoy using these sheets. I’d love to see how you use them. Post yours on Instagram and tag me (@cosmicfaery).

Using the Tarot to Communicate with the Dead

communicate with the dead
Deck: Bohemian Gothic Tarot, 1st Edition (c) Baba Studio

Samhain / Halloween is fast approaching, a time when the veil between the world of the living and the dead is at its thinnest.

So it comes to no surprise that if you wish to make contact with dearly departed, this is the perfect night to do so.

I am no spiritual medium and therefore no expert in making contact with dead people, but I do feel it is possible to have a conversation with them through the Tarot.

Many years ago I tried to make contact with my mum, who had died the year before, and even though nothing spooky happened during the reading, I did have some interesting dreams on several occasions afterwards, some of which where astounding to say the least.

This year I intend to make contact with my Dad, who passed over in July this year, so while I’m still going through the process of coming to terms with it, I have the need to reconcile with him in some way.

I do believe that making contact with a departed loved one can help bring some closure and therefore contribute to the healing process.

So, my advice is only to communicate with the dead, if your intention is reconciliation, closure and healing.

The Ritual

1. Questions

Before you begin, think about the questions you would like to ask your loved one. Write them all down, so you won’t forget during the reading.

Although it’s always worthwhile wording your questions wisely, you can ask anything you like, because you are trying to talk to someone you once loved (and still do), and they loved you too, so they won’t mind!

Questions like “How are you?”, “Are you at peace now?”, “What’s it like?” are perfectly okay. You don’t need to censor yourself. In addition you can also ask your loved one for advice just like you used to when they were still with you.

2. Timing

Do your spirit reading later in the evening on the 31st October. The best time would be around the witching hour. Make sure you won’t get disturbed by anybody, like those pesky trick-or-treaters or whoever lives with you.

3. Sacred Space

Set the scene with seasonal decorations, candles and crystals (see also Halloween ideas).

For this kind of work I love using my Black Obsidian Skull. The energetic vibrations of carved crystal skulls are said to make a mental connection with your brain, thus helping you to be more receptive to messages from the spirit world.

4. Grounding

Start with your usual grounding ritual and include a request to the spirit world, such as “Spirit world, please open up to me, so (insert the person’s name you wish to talk to) can talk to me.”

It also helps, if you have a personal item from your loved one you can hold whilst asking him/her to come forward.

5. Reading

Once you feel you are ready, or you may even feel the presence of your loved one, you can begin the reading.

Shuffle your deck while thinking of your loved one. For each question you have, pull a card. The messages you receive from the cards may be from your loved one.

I say “may”, because they may also be from your own subconscious, which knows the answers all along and has the desire to reveal them to you, so you can heal.

Either way, this reading can contribute to your healing process by helping you feel connected to your loved one and getting some answers you need.

Autumn Equinox – Embracing The Dark Season

autumn equinox oracle cardA friend of mine told me recently that she found the transition from summer to autumn hard.

The falling leaves make her feel depressed, and she was dreading the unavoidable approach of the long cold winter months ahead.

To a certain degree I understand her sentiment, but once you consciously decide to tune in and embrace the light and dark of all the seasons, you discover the magick and beauty of each one of them.

Just like the trees shed their leaves in the autumn, so can we shed old stuff that is holding us back.

The shedding of leaves is preparation for new life and growth in spring, and we can do the same in order to pave the way for new experiences and growth.

Today is Virgo’s (the Hermit) last day in the sun until Libra (Justice) takes over tomorrow.

Over the last four weeks, the energy of the Hermit has encouraged us to go inwards, reflect and explore what new skills to learn, new knowledge we can acquire and how we can turn it into wisdom that will serve us and others well in time to come.

The New Moon in Libra tomorrow invokes the energies of Justice, encouraging us to create and appreciate harmony in life, especially in relationships, including friendships that need building and nurturing.

So there is much we can do, and the approaching darkness will help us focus on what we need to do including planning and implementing.

Perhaps today at the time of the Autumn Equinox, or over the coming weeks until Samhain, you may want to consult the Tarot to explore some of the following questions to help you gain focus and direction:

What is holding me back right now that I need to let go of?

At this time of year with the energies of Libra/Justice, explore your options rather than making a decision. It’s about weighing up the pros and cons, so you can make your final decision by Samhain (31 October).

What new skills do I need to learn to help me reach my goals?

Depending on the card/s you draw, these could relate to

  • leadership and creativity (fire, wands),
  • emotions and relationships (water, cups),
  • mental challenges and conflict resolving (air, swords), or
  • hands-on practical skills and money management (earth, pentacles)

What can I do to strengthen my relationships with people that are important to me?

Remember that important people in your life are not restricted to your partner or close family, but also extended family, friends, co-workers, professional networks… Explore how you can build bridges, overcome conflict, encourage solidarity and teamwork, bring people closer together etc.

And here are a few other practical ideas to get you started:

  • make a to-do list
  • declutter your bookshelf to make room for new knowledge
  • network with people and see what you can do for them
  • when it comes to friendships, it’s not about quantity but quality. Only two genuine friends are worth more than a large bunch of acquaintances, who don’t care about you.
  • get your finances in order
  • avoid drama and the people creating it
  • enrol on a course

Wishing you a Happy Equinox and a magickal autumn season ahead.

Warmest wishes,

Christiane

Ask the Right Questions

ask the right questionsWhen clients approach me for a reading, they are often tempted to ask questions like

When will I find new love?
When will I get a new job?
Does he still love me?
What does the future have in store for me?
Will my business be successful? etc…

Although I don’t rephrase questions and aim to answer them as best as possible, I also include some additional insight clients may not have thought about, which are meant to provide opportunities for personal development and growth.

It is important to ask the right questions, which put you in control and empower you. Strive to “know thyself” with the help of Tarot.

Through self-exploration you will find the answers within you rather than hoping to find them elsewhere.

“An empowered life begins with serious personal questions about oneself. Those answers bare the seeds of success.”
– Steve MaraboliUnapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience

Here are some personal questions you can explore with the Tarot, which you can also adapt to a specific issue:

“Who am I?”
“What do I need?”
“How do I function best?”
“How can I achieve my dreams?”
“How can I fulfil my potential?”
“What are my strengths and weaknesses?”
“What is blocking me?”
“What do I need to pay attention to at this moment in time?”
“What do I have to give?”
“How can I help and support others?”
“What’s the next step I can take right now?”

Self-inquiries like these help you

  • stay true to your values and principles
  • pursue your dreams and desires
  • take responsibility and make the most of what life throws at you
  • recover from setbacks
  • grow through challenges and adversity
  • set and maintain healthy boundaries
  • learn from your mistakes
  • accept and embrace change with confidence and resilience
  • add value to others and the world around you

“At the end of the day, the questions we ask of ourselves determine the type of people that we will become.” Leo Babauta

The right question should encourage you to take action rather than sitting back waiting for something to happen or surrendering to fate.

The right question should also discourage you from regarding yourself as a victim, and instead inspire you to step into your power in order to heal from any negative experiences.

For more information on asking the right questions, you can also check out relevant posts here and on my journal blog.

Warmest wishes,

Seasons Greetings – Recommended Tarot Goodies

Three of Cups, Snowland Tarot (C) Ron & Janet Boyer

Not long to go until we can celebrate the return of longer days on the Winter Solstice and get all festive and over-indulgent over the Christmas holidays.

In the spirit of the season, I’d love to share some fabulous Tarot goodies with you.

First of all, the image you can see here is from the Snowland Tarot deck.

I love this card! Can you see the fart bubbles on the water behind one of the monkeys? What do they suggest to you? 😀

My Tarot Moon Journal 2014 is now available to download. It’s a practical workbook for you to use throughout the new year, and in addition I can recommend Jordan Hoggard’s Area 52 ebook, your ultimate Tarotscope companion for 2014!

I love the advice Jordan offers for the 1 January “Make today feel like a really long day in all the right ways”. Yes!

And the weekly words of wisdom are ingenious; for the first week in January it’s “quench”. You will have a whole year of fun and inspiration with Area 52.

If you would like to use your Tarot cards in more creative ways, take a look at the Tarot Activity Book by Andy Matzner.

I’ve only received this book today and must say its wealth of innovative activities and exercises is impressive. I’m really looking forward to taking time out over the holidays to try some of them.

Last but not least, here is my little gift to you, a seasonal Tarot spread. Click on the link to download the PDF journaling sheet:

Five Effective One Card Readings

five effective one card readings
What can you see in the Chariot image? © 1990 US Games

If you are just beginning to get to know the Tarot, you may want to avoid the 10-card Celtic Cross spread and start off with simple yet effective one card readings.

Yes, pulling just one card from your deck can already tell you a hell of a lot about what is going on around you.

It can even tell you a bit about your personality, habits, strengths and weaknesses.

Here are five ways to read one Tarot card and get instant, meaningful messages:

1. Calculate your year card. It offers you some insight on the energies and overall theme that will be influencing you during the course of the year. Do the same for family and friends to get to know the cards and discover what might be in store for them over the year.

2. Calculate your personality card. This card will give you some ideas on your life lessons and purpose in this life; another great one-card reading to try on your family and friends.

3. Discover your persona card. Find out which court card is linked to your sun sign and explore your court card personality. This is a good way to acquaint yourself with the often tricky court cards, so make sure you also practice the persona card reading with plenty of people you know.

4. Do a daily one-card draw. You can either pull a card in the morning to see what may come up for you during the day, or you can pull one in the evening for the following day. Record them on a chart like this, and after a week analyse the cards drawn for more insight: Which suit has come up most? How many Major Arcana cards? How many court cards and which ones? How accurate have your interpretations been?

5. Do a weekly one-card draw. If you are too busy for a card-a-day, you can draw just one card for the week ahead to offer you some insight on the energies you can expect over the forthcoming days. Use this journaling sheet to record your interpretation and predictions you come up with.

For your daily and weekly draw you can also use my ebook  The Cosmic Faery Tarot Guidebook to help you with your readings until you are more confident with your interpretations.

The more you practice, the more messages and insight you will receive from just one card.

Take your time when you look at the image, and let its symbolism speak to you: what kind of landscape do you see? What colours? Any people? Are they happy, sad, angry, alone?

Learn to notice the little details, and over time you will find it easier to interpret the cards without the help of a book.

For a beginner, larger spreads can be confusing, and a one-card draw is the ideal starting point for simple yet insightful readings.

Warmest wishes,

Christiane

Happy Spring Equinox

spring equinoxThe days are getting longer, but due to the snow we’ve been having here in Leeds, the warmer weather just seems like a distant dream away.

Despite the cold, the Robin in the garden is building his nest – so pleased to see he’s building it in the ivy growing up the wall of our house.

His little family will be safe up there from the cats at least.

The Robin has inspired me to create a new image for my oracle deck in progress, which will be in the same style as my Tarot of Quotes. Feel free to share it.

The Spring Equinox is a time of new life emerging and the promise of long, sunny, carefree summer days ahead.

Spring heralds the dawning of creativity, generating new ideas, making plans, setting goals and working on turning dreams into reality.

It’s like sowing seeds and nurturing them to fruition.

What are your creative aspirations you would like to pursue and manifest over the coming months?

If you want to use the Tarot for guidance, you can try out my Ostara tarot spread to explore your opportunities and make things happen.

It’s always so rewarding to see how students benefit from my teachings.

Please read Joanna’s seasonal article about how she has applied astrology in her tarot work on her blog Sun Goddess Tarot.

It’s an inspirational springtime read, and from there you can explore and enjoy even more interesting tarot related articles.

Wishing you a Blessed and Inspiring Spring Equinox!
