Using the Tarot to Communicate with the Dead

communicate with the dead
Bohemian Gothic Tarot 1st Edition (c) Alex Ukolov and Karen Mahony, Baba Studio 2010

Samhain / Halloween is fast approaching, a time when the veil between the world of the living and the dead is at its thinnest.

So it comes to no surprise that if you wish to make contact with dearly departed, this is the perfect night to do so.

I am no spiritual medium and therefore no expert in making contact with dead people, but I do feel it is possible to have a conversation with them through the Tarot.

Many years ago I tried to make contact with my mum, who had died the year before, and even though nothing spooky happened during the reading, I did have some interesting dreams on several occasions afterwards, some of which where astounding to say the least.

This year I intend to make contact with my Dad, who passed over in July this year, so while I’m still going through the process of coming to terms with it, I have the need to reconcile with him in some way.

I do believe that making contact with a departed loved one can help to bring some closure and therefore contribute to the healing process.

So, my advice is only to communicate with the dead, if your intention is reconciliation, closure and healing.

The Ritual

1. Questions

Before you begin, think about the questions you would like to ask your loved one. Write them all down, so you won’t forget during the reading.

Although it’s always worthwhile wording your questions wisely, you can ask anything you like, because you are trying to talk to someone you once loved (and still do), and they loved you too, so they won’t mind!

Questions like “How are you?”, “Are you at peace now?”, “What’s it like?” are perfectly okay. You don’t need to censor yourself. In addition you can also ask your loved one for advice just like you used to when they were still with you.

2. Timing

Do your spirit reading later in the evening on the 31st October. The best time would be around the witching hour. Make sure you won’t get disturbed by anybody, like those pesky trick-or-treaters or whoever lives with you.

3. Sacred Space

Set the scene with seasonal decorations, candles and crystals (see also Halloween ideas).

For this kind of work I love using my Black Obsidian Skull. The energetic vibrations of carved crystal skulls are said to make a mental connection with your brain, thus helping you to be more receptive to messages from the spirit world.

4. Grounding

Start with your usual grounding ritual and include a request to the spirit world, such as “Spirit world, please open up to me, so (insert the person’s name you wish to talk to) can talk to me.”

It also helps, if you have a personal item from your loved one you can hold whilst asking him/her to come forward.

5. Reading

Once you feel you are ready, or you may even feel the presence of your loved one, you can begin the reading.

Shuffle your deck while thinking of your loved one. For each question you have, pull a card. The messages you receive from the cards may be from your loved one.

I say “may”, because they may also be from your own subconscious, which knows the answers all along and has the desire to reveal them to you, so you can heal.

Either way, this reading can contribute to your healing process by helping you feel connected to your loved one and getting some answers you need.

If you are planning to do a reading that is focused on self-exploration, then you can try out the spread in the box on the right.

And last but not least, head over to my journal blog to download my free Manifesting Change printable healing cards.

Samhain Blessings,

Christiane

Season’s Greetings – How To Make your Dreams Come True

how to make your dreams come true
Oracle of Quotes

During challenging times, it can be a blessing to stumble across something inspirational, that not only keeps you going but also encourages you to aim higher than you thought possible.

Often it is the simplest piece of advice that can make everything fall into place and lead you into the right direction.

I came across this quote chosen for the Winter Solstice card of my Oracle of Quotes on Tumblr, and it made me change my perspective of the situation I am currently trying to manage.

The time around the Winter Solstice is about new beginnings, rebirth, vitality, illuminations, enlightenment and revelations.

Now is the perfect time to focus on how to make your dreams come true, and really make it happen.

But where do you start?

Well, “ask yourself what is really important and then have the courage to build your life around your answer”.

Change can be overwhelming, but in order to avoid stagnation, it is sometimes necessary to face your fears and recognise your reasons for your reluctance to move forward.

Journalling can help, not only to formulate your goals but also take a step-by-step approach to get to where you want to be.

But instead of using a blank journal, you could try a guided journalling workbook to help you focus.

Check out Leonie Dawson’s 2015 life & biz workbooks, or if you prefer to use the Tarot together with astrology and the moon phases, treat yourself to the Tarot Moon Journal 2015, a gift that will last a whole year, and perhaps even longer depending on how you use it to transform your life…

In the meantime, I wish you a blessed holiday season full of joy, healing and peace.

May you have the courage to make your dreams come true.

Tarot cards: Rosetta Tarot

Now that the Tarot Moon Journal 2015 is available to download, I would like to share with you, how you can add text to it without the need to print it out.

Many people aren’t aware that it is very easy to add notes, text and even images to PDF documents.

1. Adobe Reader

Download this free software on your computer, or download the app on your tablet (available on Windows, iPad and Android)

When you open the Reader, look out for the ‘add text’ feature, which is an icon of a pen and paper.

You can add text where ever you like on the document, and you can even choose font, colour and size of your writing.

There is also an option to add a note, which opens up a box and is ideal for adding more text than fits in the space provided in the ebook. Look out for the speech bubble icon.

2. iPad Apps

NotePlus is a niftly app for the iPad. You can import your PDF document into

The Adobe Reader is also available as an android app.

You can download my free journaling sheets and try out your chosen Reader, before you buy my ebooks.

Technology is amazing nowadays. If you do absolutely everything on your device and want to avoid paper, using my ebooks and journaling sheets digitally is the way forward.

Zodiac Tarot Cards Journaling Sheets

zodiac tarot cardsThe 12 signs of the zodiac are linked to 12 Major Arcana cards in the Tarot.

We all know our sun signs, but an astrological chart based on your date, place and time of birth also reveals your moon sign and ascendant (rising sign).

Once you have determined your zodiac signs’ corresponding Tarot cards, you can explore the dynamics of the different aspects of your personality by using the visual cues of your cards rather than just astrological glyphs.

If you are new to Tarot astrology, then my Zodiac Tarot cards journaling sheets will help you make a start with your self-exploration and learn to include astrology in your Tarot work.

Even if you only know your sun sign at this stage, the handout will still prove useful to determine personality traits and work out your zodiac lessons.

Five Effective One Card Readings

Chariot, Universal Waite Tarot
What can you see in the Chariot card?
© 1990 US Games Inc.

If you are just beginning to get to know the Tarot, you may want to avoid the 10-card Celtic Cross spread and start off with simple yet effective one card readings.

Yes, pulling just one card from your deck can already tell you a hell of a lot about what is going on around you.

It can even tell you a bit about your personality, habits, strengths and weaknesses.

Here are five ways to read one Tarot card and get instant, meaningful messages:

1. Calculate your year card. It offers you some insight on the energies and overall theme that will be influencing you during the course of the year. Do the same for family and friends to get to know the cards and discover what might be in store for them over the year.

2. Calculate your personality card. This card will give you some ideas on your life lessons and purpose in this life; another great one-card reading to try on your family and friends.

3. Discover your persona card. Find out which court card is linked to your sun sign and explore your court card personality. This is a good way to acquaint yourself with the often tricky court cards, so make sure you also practice the persona card reading with plenty of people you know.

4. Do a daily one-card draw. You can either pull a card in the morning to see what may come up for you during the day, or you can pull one in the evening for the following day. Record them on a chart like this, and after a week analyse the cards drawn for more insight: Which suit has come up most? How many Major Arcana cards? How many court cards and which ones? How accurate have your interpretations been?

5. Do a weekly one-card draw. If you are too busy for a card-a-day, you can draw just one card for the week ahead to offer you some insight on the energies you can expect over the forthcoming days. Use this journalling sheet to record your interpretation and predictions you come up with.

For your daily and weekly draw you can also use my ebook Empowering Messages from the Tarot to help you with your readings until you are more confident with your interpretations. Also, check out the Tarot Study for more journalling sheets and Tarot lessons.

The more you practice, the more messages and insight you will receive from just one card. Take your time when you look at the image, and let its symbolism speak to you: what kind of landscape do you see? What colours? Any people? Are they happy, sad, angry, alone?

Learn to notice the little details, and over time you will find it easier to interpret the cards without the help of a book.

For a beginner, larger spreads can be confusing, and a one-card draw is the ideal starting point for simple yet insightful readings.

Warmest wishes,

Christiane
