Tarot Card of the Month: The Star

On the 20th January we enter the sun sign of Aquarius (20th Jan—19th Feb). The Major Arcana card relating to this sign is the Star.

On the right you can see the beautiful and reassuring image of the Star. This card suggest renewal, hope and a brighter future ahead.

When the Star appears in your reading, it may suggest that you have experienced times of upheaval in your recent past, but now there is  light at the end of the tunnel. The Star invokes feelings of tranquility and serenity, perhaps even contentment.

This card suggests that whatever situation you are stuck in—career, relationship, lifestyle—you now have a clearer view of what you need to do, in order to make positive changes. Better times will be ahead; you are slowly moving towards your goal.

The Star advises you to be optimistic; don’t get trapped in negative thoughts. Now is also a good time to look after your health and bring your finances in order. In your relationship, consider compromising rather than being stubborn. You may find that your life will become more peaceful and relaxed.

The Moon Phases in January and February

New Moon: 19th January

First quarter: 25th January

Full Moon: 2nd February—Wolf Moon

Last Quarter: 10th February

New Moon: 17th February

2nd February: Imbolc

Our Celtic ancestors celebrated Imbolc, the beginning of a new life cycle. Days are starting to get longer, and Spring is just around the corner.

Light come, light grow

Sun shine, candle glow

Flowers bloom, milk flow

Light come, light grow

Celebrate the day by lighting yellow candles and baking traditional Celtic bread (see recipe below).

Website of the Month: The Museum of Love

Artist Kris Waldherr, creator of the Goddess and Lover’s Path Tarot, has launched a new website dedicated to love.

Text Box: Recipe of the Month: Bride’s Bannock (Celtic Bread)

This bread is made in honour of Bride, the Celtic Goddess of fertility, poetry and the hearth.
You will need a heavy frying pan to make the bread.

Ingredients:
6 oz oatmeal
2 oz all-purpose flour
1 oz butter
1 teaspoon salt
1 pinch baking soda
10 oz water

Method:
Sift the flour, salt and baking soda into the oatmeal.
Boil the water, add the butter until melted, then pour into the dry ingredients. Mix until the mixture is a spongy dough. A little extra water can be used if necessary.
Turn mixture onto a surface covered with plenty of dry oatmeal and scatter more on top. Flatten the dough and roll out to 1/4 inch thickness, then place a dinner plate on top and trim into a neat circle. Scatter on more oatmeal and rub it in all over the surface.
Score the top in the shape of a cross.
Lift carefully onto a greased, preheated frying pan. Cook on medium heat till the bottom is golden brown and the sides are beginning to dry out and curl.
Place under a grill to toast the top.
Serve hot and crisp with butter.

Tarot Glossary

A for Arcana

The Tarot is divided into the Major (22 Trump cards) and the Minor (56 Pip cards) Arcana. The word Arcana is the plural form of Arcanum, the Latin meaning for secret and mystery, so in Tarot the cards represent the Greater and the Lesser Secrets.

Arcanum/Arcana originated in the late 14th century and was used to describe a ‘great secret of nature that the alchemists sought to discover’ (Random House Dictionary 2006).  This may refer to the ‘elixir of life’,  a powerful remedy or secret essence, which would prolong life.

Paul Christian, a student of the French Occultist and author Éliphas Lévi, first used the term arcane for the two sets of cards in the 18th century.
