Time Passing |
It is a sad fact that our society is obsessed with eternal youth. Surgery and other invasive treatments have been developed to erase any signs of ageing, which now seem to be deemed as ‘embarrassing’. Lines and wrinkles, white hair, the body succumbing to gravity… is all part of the natural ageing process, which a lot of people find hard to accept. Don’t get me wrong: it’s a good thing staying young—mentally and physically— by choosing a healthy lifestyle. Fortunately, it is possible nowadays to stay looking younger for longer by choosing the right diet and do regular exercise. Stopping bad habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and sun-bathing will already be major contributing factors in delaying the ageing process. By acting early in your life, you will not have to be obsessed with your looks as the years move on, and you can age gracefully. Also consider taking a step back from rushing through your life; our society is fast moving and ever-changing. People forget to have a rest, but taking a break from a hectic lifestyle is important to nurture body and soul. To help you on the way, discover the true miracles about time passing:

Do not resent growing old. Many are denied the privilege. |
A phoenix. “Torched in the light of my awareness, my false self crumbles. Phoenix-like I create myself anew.” Modern affirmation.

An inch of time. “And inch of time is worth an inch of gold. But an inch of gold cannot buy an inch of time.” Chinese Proverb |
Take control. Perform this exercise to calm anxiety when you are feeling you are running out of time. Begin by saying “stop” and pausing from your activity. Breathe in slowly and deeply. As you exhale imagine that time is expanding. Repeat this with your next two breaths, each time spending a little longer on the out-breath. You can now resume your task with a more focused mind. |
The nobility of ageing. As you lose your youthful strength, and your body acquires a more ‘lived-in’ look, meditate on your true self, your essential consciousness. Body-consciousness has no place in your thoughts. You are old enough to know what really matters. |
“And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” Abraham Lincoln (1809—1865) |
Tower of wisdom. Gain strength and dignity from your wisdom. As the years settle on our heads like snow, the innocence and energy of youth is replaced by the wisdom and perspective of experience. Imagine yourself in a tower full of books containing all the wisdom that you have acquired over the years. What are the titles of these books? What illustrations do they contain? Draw a sense of depth and strength from this tower of wisdom. |

Follow the Tao. Tao is a Chinese word meaning “the way” or “the path”. Taoism is an Eastern philosophy based on the principle that life involves ceaseless movement from one form to another. Problems arise when we attempt to resist or control the natural pattern of change. Harmony can be restored by following the Tao—that is by “going with the flow”, accepting the ever-changing pattern of life without judgement or resistance. |
